How do assets become unclaimed property? For example, if you opened a savings account with a bank and sometime later moved and forgot about the account. The bank is required by law to file a report and forward those assets to the State Treasurer. Assets are held in the custody of the state indefinitely until the owner or rightful heirs come forward. States maintain a database of names for all accounts turned over to it. There is no time limit to claim the money!

The Treasurer does not attempt to locate the owner,
this is why the Unclaimed Property Locater is so valuable
.

The most common types of unclaimed property are:
Checking / Savings Accounts Stocks and Mutual Funds Payroll Checks
Life Insurance Proceeds Credit Balances HUD/FHA Refunds
Gas and Mineral Royalties Money Orders Overpayments and Refunds
Dividends Cashiers Checks Customer Deposits

Here's how you make money as a locator.

(Let's look at this hypothetical example)

You start by simply typing names into the State Unclaimed Property Database (links below) using a local whitepages phone directory as your source. As you type in random names, you pull-up a Jerry Price at 1235 Hill St., Los Angeles, CA. with $8,200.00 from PRUDENTIAL INSURANCE COMPANY.
Looking at your whitepages directory you see that Jerry Price now possibly resides at 541 Oak St., Glendale, CA.  Could this be the same individual?   It's probably worth giving Jerry a call to find out if you have a match.  So, you call, Mr. Price to see if he once lived at the 1235 Hill St. address.
(Knowing about his previous address and where the money came from gives you real credibility.)

(Example script)

ring, ring, ring,
"May I speak to Jerry Price please. (This is Jerry) Hi Mr. Price, my name is _______, I am an Unclaimed Property Locator. I might have some good news for you... Let me ask you, did you have a previous address of 1235 Hill St ? (yes i did.)  Well, it looks like I have located approximately $8200.00 from a
PRUDENTIAL INSURANCE COMPANY that has been declared abandoned. The owner of these funds is a Jerry Price whose previous address was 1235 Hill. Do you remember anything about this money? (oh yeah I think I do...)  Well, as I mentioned before, I' am an Unclaimed Property Locator and my job is to match up lost money with the rightful owner and it looks like we have a match, so it looks like you have might have $8,200 coming back to you!!!  The property in question is currently in the possession of the State Treasurer.  For example, if you opened an account or made a deposit with a bank, and forgot about your assets, the bank is required by law after 3-7 years to file a report and forward those assets to the State Treasurer.  The Treasurer is responsible for safeguarding assets indefinitely until the rightful owners come forward.  Anyway, as a locator, I receive a small 10% finder’s fee for locating the property and matching it up the the rightfull owner.  If this is acceptable to you I will forward you a letter concerning these funds and the Agreement Form.  Once I receive the signed 'Agreement Form', I will send you a 'Claim Form' and instructions so you can make your claim.  Mr. Price, please note that the Agreement states that I will be paid my fee only if the $8200 is retrieved.  I will give you ample opportunity to confirm the existence and take possession of the funds.  I will also consult with you, if you desire, on how to claim your funds. Congratulations sir !"

Just click on any link in the table below. Search for familiar names, family members or even companies. Here's a hint: One of the best sources for names is your local white pages, so grab your local phone book and try it out. You will be blown away at how easy this business really is.

Attention

Unfortunately, some states don't disclose the exact dollar amount owed to the individual. They only let you know it's either (Over $100) or (Under $100) which is not much help to the locator. In this case it would be difficult to work those States effectively. There is good news for a handful of States. If you see a $$$ next to the State in the database below, that means that State discloses the exact dollar amount held.
